顎式破碎機是靠可動顎板周期地壓向固定顎板，將夾于其中的物料壓碎。兩個顎板都是長方形的。顎式破碎機活動顎板的擺動可分為簡單擺動、復雜擺動和組合擺動等三種。
顎式破碎機根據(jù)給料口寬度來區(qū)分型號的大、中、小；給料口寬度大于600mm者為大型；300～600mm者為中型；﹤300mm者為小型。其規(guī)格以給料口寬度B和長度L來表示，例如250×400顎式破碎機，表示其給料口寬250mm，長400mm。
加氣混凝土廠通常采用中、小型復雜擺動式顎式破碎機，尤以250×400型號居多。
顎式破碎機的構造簡單，檢查和更換零件容易，管理和維修方便，運轉時間比較長。其缺點主要是擺動性大，產(chǎn)生很大的慣性力，對機器基礎要求較高，一般不宜于安裝在樓層上。
